A sudden and painless paralysis of one side of the face. In one series, 98% of the patients
tested positive for the Herpes virus in cultures
of the middle ear
fluid. The affected side of the face droops, and the patient may drool
from the affected corner
of the mouth. The eyelid remains
open on the affected side,
causing dryness and light sensitivity. Early treatment with prednisone
and anti viral medication can shorten the duration
of the paralysis.
Sunglasses help minimize light irritation of the affected eye.
Paralysis lasts from a few weeks to several months.
