Gout:
Caused
by deposition of Uric Acid Crystals in the affected joints, it is a
disease that is transmitted by heredity, and triggered by certain
foods. Uric Acid is a breakdown metabolite of the Amino Acid Purine, a
building block of Protein. It is more common in Men then Women.
Crystals can be seen under the microscope in the fluid of the affected
Joints. Although the large toe joint ( first metatarso- phalangeal ) is
the most common affected joint, Gout can occur in the ankle, knee,
elbow and shoulder. Immediate symptom of Gout is Pain. Long term
consequences are Kidney stones, and joint damage. Alcohol intake can
precipitate a Gouty attack. Treatment of an attack is accomplished by
Oral antiinflammatory agents and Colchicine. Preventetaive medications
( Allopurinol and Probenecid ) are useful in Patients with recurrent
attack, evident of joint damage, uric acid kidney stones and elevated
blood levels of uric Acid. Dietary restriction is rarely
necessary due to availability of effective drugs.
