Menningococcal Vaccine:

        Approved for high risk populations over the age of 2. Not effective against type B, which
accounts for 55% of US cases. This fact was recently challanged by a study which showed
that the vaccine was over 90% effective in preventing outbreaks of Menningitis in target populations despite the lack of the B subtype in the vaccine.

Target Populations:

1. College freshmen
2. Medical & Laboratory personnel
3. Travelers to endemic areas
4. Patients without spleens( functional& surgical)
5. Military recruits.
